Catherine Asaro is an American scientist and scholar who also writes science fiction and fantasy. Asaro is best known for the Saga of the Skolian Empire novels. If anything, Catherine has shown an uncanny ability to use her doctorate to bring a grounded edge to the arena of science fiction and fantasy.

The author was born in in Oakland, California, though most of her childhood was spent in El Cerrito. The author has made effective use of her skills in the education sector. Over the years, she has availed her services to public and private students, sometimes extending her tutelage to homeschooling programs.

The Yang Academy in Gaithersburg, Maryland can attest to her gifts as a scholar and a teacher because she has participated in their gifted program in Math and Science.

There are students in the United States who impute their success in national competitions on the academic landscape to the efforts of Catherine Asaro. Suffice it to say, Catherine has made more of a mark on the world than many of her peers in the publishing arena will ever know.

Her efforts as a member of a think tank called SIGMA have seen her help the government predict future trends that may impact national security. Along with giving speeches at institutions like NASA and the National Academy of Sciences, Catherine is also quite vocal about the importance of overcoming traditional gender roles and bringing women into the science arena.

For all her efforts in the sciences, one would be forgiven for envisioning Catherine Asaro as a stuffy scholar with her head forever stuck in her books. In fact, most of them will reject the idea that Catherine Asaro was once a ballet and jazz dancer until you lay the proof out for them.

She actually performed with dance companies. There are people on both coasts that can attest to her talents in that arena. Catherine actually started out in the arts. She was a pretty proficient ballet dancer and pianist before she even hit her teens. She also loved to read fiction. The author had her sights set on a dance major at UCLA.

Everything changed when Catherine discovered math and science. There were times when she had absolutely no clue what her teachers were saying. But then, one day, she read a chapter on quantum theory in a book and it hooked her. The more she read the more she wanted to know.

One thing led to another and the author eventually got her Ph. Even with the rigors of her math and science courses at University, Catherine never stopped dancing. Both the sciences and the arts had their hooks in her and she pursued them with a lot of fervor. And it only made sense that she would eventually blend those two elements together to produce fiction. The author looks at her stories like problems that must be solved, no different from any other math equation. The author started out writing short fiction that appeared in magazines and anthologies.

She was nominated for various awards as a result. She eventually graduated to full-length novels of which the Saga of the Skolian Empire series is the most popular. Because of her scholarly background, Catherine Asaro tends to write hard science fiction.

Her books feature sophisticated scientific concepts. She has been known to throw equations and diagrams into the mix. Catherine endeavors to create a fine balance between the story and the science of her books. She is well aware that not all her readers understand science like her. As such, she works hard to not overwhelm them.

Catherine did not know how to sing at the time so she had to take voice lessons. They have a daughter. The technological advancement allows them to dominate a third of the civilized galaxy. However, the Skolian Empire is not invincible.

They stand on the brink of war with the rival empire of the Traders. The Skolians cannot afford to lose, not if they want to avoid slavery. However, an all-out conflict could see both sides destroyed. With the smaller skirmishes at play already manifesting signs of potential disaster down the line, steps are taken to prevent the worst possible scenario from coming to pass.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when an advisor to the King of Aronsdale ventures out to identify shape-mages. This advisor singles her out as a promising mage, a decision that sees Chime sent to Castle Suncroft where she will not only have her magecraft abilities defined but she will also marry Prince Muller.

For Muller, nothing is more important than fashion. Like Chime, Muller is thrown into the thick of things when his father dies and a rival kingdom uses that opportunity to strike. Spherical Harmonic

As a child, Dyhianna Selei created a transformation, just a mathematical construct, mapping the real world into an abstract space of "thoughts" whatever that means spanned by an infinite set of spherical harmonic eigenfunctions. As an adult, she finds herself transported into that space which she thought of as a theoretical construct and finds that it is inhabited by monsters, people, danger and intrigue. Asaro, who has degrees in physics and chemistry, includes discussion of the spherical harmonic functions both as part of the story and in non-fictional appendices. So, let me say a little bit about what these functions are. A less obvious fact is that whatever function f x you think of that has the property in the first sentence, it can be made as a sum perhaps an infinite sum of multiples of functions of the form sin nx over all positive integers n. This is the fact underlying Fourier analysis, breaking up a sound into the different frequencies that make it up. In this sense, they form a basis for the space of such functions.
